The State Government has announced the appointment of Mr Michael Lennon as the Chair of the State Planning Commission (the Commission) following the resignation of inaugural Chair Mr Tim Anderson QC.

“I wish to express my sincere thanks to Mr Anderson for the important formative work he has undertaken in establishing the State Planning Commission,” said Minister for Planning Stephan Knoll.

“Mr Anderson has led the delivery of some key planning reform instruments, namely the inaugural Community Engagement Charter and draft State Planning Policies.

“He has helped build a Commission that is approachable and communicative through his collaborative approach and willingness to meet with key stakeholders, most notably local government.

“I thank him for his support and leadership which has led to good decision making and the provision of robust advice to the government."

“I’m looking forward to working constructively with Mr Lennon as we continue to work through South Australia’s significant planning reforms.”

Mr Anderson QC was appointed Chairperson of the State Planning Commission for a period of three years, commencing on 7 March 2017. Although his term as Chair was not due to expire until 6 March 2020, Mr Anderson offered his resignation to allow a high level of planning expertise to take over the leadership role.

“I’ve offered my resignation as I believe I have achieved the role I was appointed for,” said Mr Anderson.

“As we move into the next stage of the planning reform process and delivery of the Planning and Design Code, it is my firm belief that the Commission should be under the leadership and guidance of a planning expert.”

Mr Lennon, a current Commission member, has a 25-year international career in housing, planning and urban development. His strong networks within the planning and development sectors, practical experience in delivering significant housing projects and commitment to the new system, sees him best placed to lead this new phase of the Commission.

“I am excited and humbled to be taking over this important role from Tim Anderson who has been an exemplary Commission Chair, and I look forward to the challenge, commitment and hard work required to deliver South Australia’s bold planning reform agenda,” said Mr Lennon.
