Draft Historic Area Statements for the Phase Two (Rural Areas) Planning and Design Code amendment released for consultation

The State Planning Commission has released a series of draft Historic Area Statements to support the draft Planning and Design Code amendment for Phase Two councils (rural areas) currently on public consultation.
Historic Area Statements
The Historic Area Statements identify and articulate the key historic features and characteristics relevant to specific locations identified within the Historic Areas Overlay. The statements also support the policies contained within the Historic Areas Overlay.

The Historic Area Statements are based on information from existing council development plans that assist in the assessment of proposals to ensure development complements the existing historic character of a particular location, such as specific materials, roof forms, or building style.
The statements currently on consultation apply to 11 Phase Two council areas which can be downloaded individually below:

Historic Area Overlay
The Historic Areas Overlay is intended to provide suitable rigour for the consistent assessment of heritage items across the state, in particular clear controls for demolition applications that consider historic importance, structural condition, and the viability of restoration.

Historic Area Statements for Phase Three
Historic Area Statements for Phase Three (Urban Areas) councils will be released by the Commission for consultation in December. Character Area Statements will also be released to support the policies contained within the Character Area Overlay (covering existing character and streetscape type zones and areas).
Character Area Statements do not apply to any Phase Two council areas
