On 27 May 2019, the Minister for Planning established a suite of six State Planning Policies for Special Legislative Schemes. Special Legislative Schemes are laws that have a direct link to the planning system and are of significant importance to the state.

These new State Planning Policies are in addition to the suite of 16 State Planning Policies released earlier this year (and that have since been updated), and collectively set out a state-wide vision for South Australia’s planning and development system.

The State Planning Policies are the highest level policy instrument in South Australia’s new planning and development system and inform other planning instruments in the new system, such as the Planning and Design Code.

They replace disparate policy positions and provide renewed direction and clarity by expressing South Australia’s planning interests in a single and consolidated vision.

Crucially, the State Planning Policies support the state’s economic, environmental and social planning priorities with a view to enhancing the liveability, sustainability and prosperity of South Australia.

The latest version of State Planning Policies came into effect on 23 May 2019 and the State Planning Policies – Special Legislative Schemes came into effect on 27 May 2019.
